2022 Key Findings
CALIFORNIA IS THE MARKET STARTER, BUT CLEAN TRANSPORTATION IS SPREADING NATIONALLY
While the epicenter of the clean fleet transition is California, a combination of public and private investment, aggressive sustainability commitments, and zero-emission regulations are catalyzing a transformation of the U.S. commercial transportation industry.
CNG AND PROPANE NO LONGER NEED FUNDING, BUT STILL BENEFIT FROM INCENTIVES
CNG and propane users continued to see significant fuel savings over diesel and both fuels have demonstrated ROIs. An original favorite of funding agencies, available incentives for CNG and propane can further improve the economics for fleets.
BATTERY-ELECTRIC VEHICLE DEMAND IS RAMPING UP DESPITE SUPPLY CHAIN DELAYS AND HIGH COSTS.
Scheduled HD BEV deployments will go from dozens to hundreds across this year and next with some sectors already seeing early scale. Fleet demand for BEVs is enormous and continues to exceed availability, while vehicle and battery costs remain stubbornly high, and the supply chain is still in development.
RENEWABLE DIESEL AND RENEWABLE NATURAL GAS SEE RECORD GROWTH WITH SUPPORT FROM CLEAN FUEL PROGRAMS
By 2025, U.S. capacity for RD is forecasted to exceed 5 billion gallons per year — enough to support 10% of the country’s current diesel demand. RNG production capacity increased by 24% from 2020 to 2021, enabling the U.S. to produce enough RNG fuel to displace nearly 574 million gallons of diesel annually.
HYDROGEN FUEL CELL VEHICLES EDGE CLOSER TO REALITY; ORDERS AND PLANNED STATIONS MORE THAN DOUBLE
Orders quadrupled for HD FCEVs in 2021, totaling 143, led by transit. Truck fleets saw the first batch of grant-funded projects for dozens of fuel cell trucks, expected to translate into orders. All public hydrogen stations are in California currently, although some are planned for other states over the next few years.
